Really Gigantic Sunspot Group
Image courtesy of SOHO (Solar & Heliospheric Observatory). Graphics & annotation by H.L. CohenDuring the last half of July 2004, a really gigantic sunspot group (#652) became visible to the naked eye
Note comparison of the sunspot group with the diameters of Earth and Jupiter
The group remained visible for over two weeks as the Sun's rotation moved the sunspots from the east toward the west limb (edge) othe the Sun
Large sunspot groups occasionally become visible to the naked eye but require safe solar viewing techniques
