Tour to Rosemary Hill Observatory
Rosemary Hill ObservatoryThe September star party had been resheduled to meet at the home of the club president, Randy Palmer. This star party will be preceded by a rare tour to the nearby Rosemary Hill Observatory (RHO) of the Department of Astronomy of the University of Florida. RHO is located about 5 miles southeast of Bronson, Florida (about a 30-40 minute drive from Gainesville).
Date: Saturday, September 15, 2001
Time: 6:30 p.m. sharp! (If late, you can't go)
Meeting Place: Randy's House (See map and directions.)
AAC members will not go directly to RHO but will first meet at Randy's house before departing for RHO. (Vistors cannot go to RHO by themselves.)
RHO is not a public observatory so a visit to this facility is a privilege. Parking is limited so the following rules apply to those wishing to go on this tour:
- Vistors must arrive by 6:30 p.m. at Randy's house.
- Visitors will carpool to RHO to minimize number of cars going.
(Members cannot drive to RHO unless their car is in the carpool.)- AAC members intending to go must sign up at the 2001 September 11 AAC meeting.
or notify Dr. Howard L. Cohen, AAC Vice President by September 11.
(We need to get an idea of how many to expect.)- AAC members will miss RHO tour if late to Randy's house.
- AAC members cannot wander around RHO by themselves.
(Guests must stay with the tour group and tour guide.)- Expected arrival at RHO is about 7:00 p.m. (about 35 minutes before sunset).
- The tour will take about one hour.
- After the RHO tour, we return to Randy's house for the club's regular, monthly star party.
- Unless it rains, RHO tour will be held regardless of sky conditions.
We will not do any observing from RHO but will see its facilities and learn about the work done at UF's professional observatory. RHO contains two principal telescopes that we will see:
To learn more about RHO, go to the Department of Astronomy's RHO web page.
