ROWLAND MEDLER
     
Rowland was a long-time AAC member who attended meetings regularly until
about a year before his death.  His voice was often heard at meetings asking
probing question about astronomical topics.  Many AAC members also knew him
through his active interest in ham radio.

Rowland Medler

Rowland Medler of Gainesville died Wednesday [Jan. 12, 2005] in Gainesville. He
was 87.

Mr. Medler was born in St. Louis and moved to Gainesville from Johnson City,
Tenn., in 1958.

He was an electrical engineer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II,
serving as a medic during combat in the Philippines. He worked in television
broadcasting for 42 years. He retired from the University of Florida's WUFT-TV in
1978 after 22 years of service.

He was a ham radio reporter from the age of 12 and enjoyed building his own ham
radio equipment and contacting other radio operators worldwide. He was a
member of the IEEE Club, the Quarter Century Wireless Association and a
founding charter member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Gainesville.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Elaine Starr Medler of Gainesville;
daughters Jan Walden of Birmingham, Ala., Marilee Bell of Bradenton and Sue
Sharp of Orlando; and three grandchildren.
