The Alachua Astronomy Club, Inc. used to hold its ATM meetings in the New Physics Building (NPB) on the University of Florida Campus in Gainesville (see Map #1 below). The New Physics Building, opened in 1998, is home to UF's Department of Physics and is one of the largest college physics buildings in the Southeast USA. The building, constructed at a cost of over 33 million dollars, won the 1998 Gainesville Beautification Gold Award in the Institutional Category.

The New Physics Building resides on the southeast corner of Museum Road and North-Side Drive on the University of Florida Campus (see Map #2 below). The front of the building is set back from Museum Drive. Several parking lots surround the building (see Map #3 below). The beautifully landscaped frontage is adorned with a magnificent oak tree and an award winning sculpture ("Moses") by Seattle artist John T. Young.

The AAC will meet in the Physics Conference Room (Rm. 2205) on the second floor balcony overlooking the main entrance lobby on the north side of the building (see Map #4 below). Directions and maps follow.

(The AAC Executive Board will decide whether or not to move
future monthly meetings to the NPB after the January 8, 2002 meeting.)

Parking (See Map #3 Below) — Several Parking Lots Are Near The NPB

  • Recommended: Commuter parking lot west of building either on surface lot or in parking garage. If possible, try small surface lot just north of parking garage since it is directly across from west building entrance. (Drive through parking structure to reach this lot). At night, parking should not be a problem in the large commuter area lot or in the parking garage. (The parking lot east of NPB often fills with Reitz Union visitors though the rear or south side of the lot may have spaces.)
  • Handicapped Parking: Adjacent to south side of building. Then go around corner to west side handicapped entrance.
  • Loading Area: If you have lots of stuff to bring in, try going in through rear loading area on south side of building and go in through loading door. (Parking, however, is not permitted in the loading area.)
