G.H. Russell (19191995)In memory of long time club member George H. Russell, the Alachua Astronomy Club occasionally awards the George H. Russell Prize to the best astronomy science projects at the Alachua County regional science fair.
The following motion was adopted by members of the Alachua Astronomy Club at its June 1995 meeting.
(Reprinted from FirstLight, July 1995):The annual Alachua Astronomy Club prize given to the best astronomy project at the annual Alachua Regional Science and Engineering Fair shall henceforth be called the George H. Russell Prize, and the president of the Alachua Astronomy Club shall notify his widow, Mrs. George Russell, in writing, of the club's action in this matter.
Mrs. George H. Russell sent the following thank you note to Mr. Robert Jacobs, then president of the club, in response to the above club's motion to honor her late husband by naming the club's astronomy science fair prize in his name.
(Reprinted from FirstLight, July 1995.)To Mr. Robert Jacobs and Members of the Astronomy Club
Thank you so much for your expressions of sympathy and for the honor you are showing George by naming the Science Award after him. He would be pleased.
This family was always proud of his participation in the Astronomy Club, his "writings" and his involvement with the school system. It is so nice to know how much you, too, value these activities.
Thank you again from all of us —
Louise Russell
