Alachua Astronomy Club: Gary Cook Residence

By invitation, AAC members sometimes meet at Gary Cook's residence for star parties. Gary's residence is on Little Orange Lake southeast of Hawthorne, Florida. Distance from Gainesville (University Ave. & SW 13 St.) is about 20 miles; driving time about 35 minutes.

[Example — From Gainesville go east on University Ave. (SR 26); then South on Hawthorne Rd. (SR 20) to Hawthorne]

South on US 301 for about 0.7 miles to SE 75 Avenue
– Note: SE 75 Avenue is about 0.05 miles past US 301 railroad crossing
– Note: Chevron Station is on left (NE) corner of US 301 & SE 75 Ave. with "Gator Landing" sign across street
Go left (East) on SE 75 Ave. about 2.1 miles to SE 101 Avenue
– Note: SE 75 Ave. also becomes known as Holden Park Road
– Note: SE 101 Ave. is 0.2 mi. past public boat ramp on left
– Note: SE 101 Ave. is an intersecting street on left – look for "Four Lakes Community" sign
Turn left on SE 101 Avenue (a paved road)

Gary Cook's Red House, #184

Go about 0.5 miles on SE 101 Avenue (paved) to where it becomes a dirt road
– Note: At Putnam/Alachua County line, paved road becomes a dirt road
As soon as SE 101 Avenue becomes a dirt road, go left onto Little Orange Lake Drive
– Note: Do not continue on SE 101 Ave., which is now Ashely Steet
Continue on Little Orange Lake Dr. (dirt) about 3/4 mile to Gary Cook's house
– Note: Follow lake perimeter until you pass the big "cow" mail box on left
– Note: Gary Cook's residence is next house (red) on left with #184 on mailbox
