Starry Night at the Museum of Natural History
April 17, 2008 (5 to 9 p.m., Telescope Viewing Till Later)
Location: Powell Exhibition Hall, Florida Museum of Natural History, Univ. of Florida Cultural Plaza (Map)
See what surprises the night sky has to offer when you witness the heavens through the lens of a telescope. Tour the constellations in a portable planetarium then enjoy presentations and activities, including a puppet show and astro-art with the University of Florida Astronomy Department and the Alachua Astronomy Club, Inc. Co-sponsored by the University of Florida Student Government.
Public Talk: Discovering New Worlds: The Search for Earth-Like Planets (6:00 p.m.)
Adventure with UF Astronomy Professor Eric Ford in his quest for understanding how planetary systems form. Discover the splendor of our own solar system, as we learn about extrasolar planets orbiting distant stars.
Dr. Eric Ford is an assistant professor of Astronomy at the University of Florida. His research focuses on studying extrasolar planets and improving our understanding of planet formation. You may read more at Dr. Ford's website.
Plus: Planetarium shows, public talks, telescope viewing, child-friendly astronomy activities, scavneger hunt and puppet show. Sponsored by the University of Florida Student Government in collaboration with The Department of Astronomy, The Florida Museum of Natural History and The Alachua Astronomy Club, Inc. (AAC)
(The AAC will set up mutliple telescopes outside Powell Hall to view the Moon, Saturn, nebulae, star clusters and double stars, and have computer video presentations on observing the Moon and Saturn.)
